The goal of the research group is to develop bioactive composite materials for reconstructive implants. The aim is to develop individual reconstruction implants for skull bones and face reconstructions and, reconstructions for cranial trephine holes after craniotomies. There is a large clinical need for this type of implants after tumor surgery and in traumatologic defect reconstructions and in the treatment of craniofacial asymmetries. The specialities needing this type of implants are head and neck surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental prosthetics and neurosurgery. Main focus is to develop individual fibre reinforced porous implant with bioactive glass components for skull bone reconstructions. In this field the group has already achieved experimentally and clinically significant results. An important aim is to further develop implants to achieve wider variety of new medical devices with cell growth and tissue regeneration favouring porous structures. Bioactive composites will be developed both for tissue reconstruction and for tissue engineering with national and international collaborators.

Research Topics:

• Bioactive glass in frontal sinus obliteration.
• Experimental studies and long-term clinical follow-up.
• Bioactive glass in calvarial bone defect reconstruction
• Composite materials in head and neck surgery
• Tailor-made implants in head and neck reconstructions
